"Hey, did you guys hear that?" Sam froze, his eyes wide.
The fire crackled as the group fell silent. At first, there was nothing but the soft rustling of leaves, the occasional hoot of an owl. Then, faint but unmistakable, an eerie cry echoed through the woods—a sound unlike anything they'd ever heard.
Lila scooted closer to Ariana. "What was that?" she whispered, her voice trembling.
Jake, trying to hide his fear behind a smirk, shrugged. "Probably just a coyote or something."
Theo frowned, his gaze narrowing as he scanned the trees. "I don't know... that didn't sound like an animal."
Ariana's pulse quickened. There was something off about that cry, something that tugged at her gut. She stood, her eyes searching the darkness beyond the firelight. "We should check it out."
