John Brookland is now retired and lives in Suffolk, U.K. after a long-varied career working at the sharp end of animal welfare in the U.K and abroad. Having always had an interest in social history and true crime he now researches and writes books and magazine articles on these subjects. These include the Detective Edwin Fowle series chronicling the exploits of a real celebrated Edwardian detective. He has also authored memoirs of his work helping animals in the U.K. and abroad and books on the history of department stores and the War Horses.
He also authors a popular educational animal welfare blog www.animalrightsandwrongs.uk commentating on international and U.K. animal issues with readers in over 70 countries. When not writing he enjoys travelling with his partner Debbie to exotic places to view wildlife and wandering the U.K. countryside.
A memoir of a young Englishman arriving in Nassau Bahamas in the 1970s to take up the post of chief inspector of the Bahamas Humane Society unaware of the frustrations, dangers and horrors he is to confront. Initially shocked by the scale of animal cruelty, and despite death threats and brushes with voodoo, he continues undaunted to help the suffering iconic surrey horses, the roaming dogs known locally as potcakes, and the shocking cruelty of the Hobby Horse Race Track. The work is relentless, and the emotional strain becomes overwhelming and soon takes its toll, but luckily the good times compensate for the bad.
He is helped in his mission by a small motley crew of staff and volunteers, and his faithful dog Condor and is welcomed by both the local and expat community, So take a visit to vintage Nassau and follow him as he adjusts to the Bahamian way of life, explores the island and escapes the harrowing work by chilling out on Paradise Island which was then still an oasis of calm.
