Imagine a world where George Washington was assassinated by an agitator who had concluded that democracy and cow-breeding were both evil institutions. The fledgling country in chaos, Martha Washington emerged as the maternal unifier. After all, the woman lived in a mob-cap—no one thought she would actually try to rule. In Queen Martha, America got its first iconic queen.
Flash forward over two hundred years, and the American Queen is the apogee of celebrity. Unsurprisingly, our future Queen, the Crown Princess Victoria, is completely miserable. Sheltered, isolated, and lonely, she's bullied by her vapid mother and mother's boyfriend, the human-walrus hybrid John Conroy. When her Aunt the Queen dies unexpectedly, Victoria is free. Better yet, she is a teenage Queen with endless resources. She orders rotten John Conroy from the palace and rejects her selfish mother. She basks in the company of the country's Commander-in-Chief, President Edwards, and his conveniently gorgeous nephew Albert, a brilliant activist. Victoria plans to be outspoken, assertive, and in control—a Queen in this new era of equality and justice. Her United States is a world where a Black man like Edwards can be elected President, a world that has progressed beyond prejudice and injustice. Or so she believes.
Then the exiled, enraged and extremely bloated John Conroy is elected President on a populist platform, capitalizing on the tensions and divisions of the country. Does Victoria embrace her growing love for Albert, who urges her to fight for the soul of her country? Or does she take the road most travelled and live the life of an ornamental, useless, spoiled queen? What does it mean to do the right thing—especially when you have everything?
