This story illustrates in the context of a western adventure certain Christian themes: courage in the face of unknown dangers, reliance on God in what would seem to be an impossible situation, reconciliation between brothers who fought on opposite sides of the Civil War, and repentance from racial prejudice. The story also illustrates the sadness and depravity of life without God.
The plot centers on the efforts of two brothers, Matthias, and Andreas Engel, who fought for the Union and the Confederacy, respectively. It is now 1866 and their little sister, Minnie (age 13) has been captured by a Comanche war party as she and her widowed father travel with a wagon train from St. Louis to Texas. Everyone is killed except Minnie. Learning of these tragic events, Matthias advertises in Missouri newspapers for men to join him in his rescue effort. Andreas reads it in the St. Joseph newspaper and his friends, Frank and Jesse James quickly volunteer to go with him to Sedalia, where the posse is forming. Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Bass Reeves also join the mission to rescue a young girl from the deadliest tribe of Indians in the West.
