When slacker and class clown, Pierce's teacher issues him with an ultimatum, be a part of the high school newspaper or fail a grade and risk getting yelled at by his already disapproving father, he finds himself on an unexpected collision course with the high school swimming champion, Jaden, when Pierce is forced to follow Jaden and write an article for the newspaper about the high school swimmer. Pierce hates everything about swimming and deep water, for good reason, but he isn't going to let that stand in the way of him acing the grade. Jaden loves being the swimming champion of the school, except when his coach, who is also his controlling father, makes him feel like a failure. When his dad agrees to let Jaden be followed by Pierce for the article as long as it doesn't disrupt his training, he has no choice but to accept. Jaden can't stand his blasé approach to life, and Pierce doesn't understand Jaden's uptight, scheduled one. They are off to a rocky start, and provoking each other – it turns out – is what they do best. But losing isn't something either of them does well. Maybe there's a way for both of them to win?
