R Frederick Finlayson lives on a mountain near a forest.
Foreword
Judging by the first part of this unusual report, it was presumably part of a larger, unpublished report by the author that pertains to life in an implausible mountain village somewhere in the ancient world. That work is not yet known to researchers. However, as scholarship continues in this field, we anticipate that the full report will one day be uncovered and its contents become available for analysis. The period in question remains something of a 'dark age' for scholars and, hence, considerable effort is now being put into shedding light upon this era of times past.
As for the second part of the fragment, its coherence with the first part seems only rudimentary, raising perplexing questions of authorship, prognostication, time and location of the Land described. There are extant references in various ancient texts to a landmass and society on Earth that could be attributed to the Great South Land. However, absolute certainty regarding the fabled land and, indeed, the references themselves, remains elusive and many scholars have concluded that the Land was but legendary rather than actual, springing from creative minds writing without direct experience of the time and place. It is from such a perspective that we must caution readers to weigh carefully the claims made and scenes described; there may well be some truth in the account but how much and of what sort, we cannot yet say.
