Jill Castelo has spent the last 25 years living on water. She has lived on a narrowboat in the UK and more recently on a vintage motor sailer in Greece.
Cradling the Bones is a collection of 15 fictional short stories inspired by travel, news items, historical events and fairy tales written over the last decade. Although wide ranging in style, location and characters they are loosely linked by one unifying theme, travel and journeys. We meet a soldier recently returned from active service trying to adjust to family life (Barbecue Bones), a couple searching for an elusive Chilean horseman (Looking for Tito Limon), and a haunted writer whose stay on a remote island produces more inspiration than he bargained for (Writer's Block). Even Stalky in the Mercurian imagines she has recently arrived at her prep school from a distant planet. Another question arising from this book is the transitory nature of all our stories. In the end what legacy do we leave, what trace remains?
