J. S. Russell is a poet, writer, educator and returned citizen who has self-published six books of poetry and two children's books while incarcerated. His work has been published by NYU's Review of Law and Social Change digital publication The Harbinger and PEN America. J. S. Russell's work shines light on the experiences, insights and reflection of an incarcerated black man. He brings awareness to the power of words by emphasizing that he wrote his freedom.
April, National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo); 30 poems in 30 days, was an exercise introduced to the author by PEN America. PEN America is an organization that encourages the incarcerated population to write, learn the various forms of writing and offers to assist those interested in the craft to express their freedom of speech. This collection of poetry is the author's response to the daily prompts. Experience this unique perspective of an incarcerated individual who is now free and wrote his freedom in the month of April, a year before his unforseen release.
