In the spring of 1242, Konrad von Sternberg, a wounded Teutonic Knight, flees across the icy steppe of Lake Peipus, pursued by Russian forces. Collapsing near a small Mongolian camp, he is nursed back to health by Narantsetseg, a young Tartar woman. Despite their cultural and language barriers, they form a deep bond, and Narantsetseg eventually seduces him, resulting in an unexpected love affair. As the Russians threaten the camp, Konrad convinces Narantsetseg, their newborn daughter Odval, and her mother Khongordzol to flee westward.
The journey is perilous, filled with harsh winters and hostile terrain. In Poland, they find temporary refuge with an elderly German couple who help Narantsetseg give birth to their son, Klaus. Though the small family overcomes many dangers, their path is still uncertain. As they head toward Konrad's homeland, they face challenges from pagan tribes and the harsh realities of survival in medieval Europe.
Konrad dreams of finding safety and a new life for his family among his people, but Narantsetseg struggles with leaving her nomadic roots behind. Their love is tested as they navigate the treacherous landscape, forging a path that could either unite them or tear them apart. As they confront the forces of fate, loyalty, and love, their journey becomes one of survival, resilience, and the hope of building a new future together.
