Stephen. L. West was born in the UK but moved to South Australia in the mid-sixties growing up mainly in the north-eastern suburbs of Adelaide. At seventeen he enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy where he learnt his trade. Whilst still serving, he married Trudi in nineteen eighty. After a ten-year career he joined the New South Wales Fire Brigades before the family, now four with two children, decided to move back to South Australia.
His writing career started in the late nineteen-eighties creating technical manuals which soon led to looking further afield and dabbling in fiction. As an amateur astronomer with a lot of interest in other sciences, he decided to write his first science fiction novel.
‘I had this thing going around and around inside my head so I decided one day to get it out of there and onto paper.’
Stephen and Trudi still live in South Australia, in the mid-north and are both involved with the Country Fire Service, Stephen as a firefighter and Trudi as a financial coordinator. Their family has expanded to six grandchildren (with more to come).
Seven Elements of Middlegame tells the story of a troop of chimpanzees who have lived in their part of the dense forest for as long as any of them can remember. They live peacefully and have all the things they need to survive. It has not always been that way with several events that have put their lives and continuation as a community at risk. The leaders know these events as "Elements" which have played out through a period they know as "Middlegame." Aroona, the current leader, details to his young offspring the elements that have shaped their world and dictates their laws and the way they should act and react. It's an obligation all chimpanzee parents have, to tell their children of such events. In this way they never forget where they came from, how they came to be, and the rules by which they must live in harmony with each other and their environment. They also learn that Rahnn, the first chimpanzee, is their god and the creator of all things; them, Jungle, the sun they call Sol, Lunna the moon and all the things they can forage for or hunt for their food. Aroona is not an ordinary chimpanzee, he's considerably bigger than most. He also prefers to contemplate and think about a problem that may beset either himself or the troop of chimpanzees he controls and leads. He has found that diplomacy and coercion are quite often better defence mechanisms than using brute force. For some time, as he sits atop Rahnn's Lookout, a sacred place that only leaders of the society can use, he has seen things that bother him, things that are disturbing in their nature. It's a long way off but it is still of concern because he cannot understand what he is seeing. The tale follows Aroona and his family as he decides, at the end of his life, to find out what it is that is bothering him, he thinks it's imperative. Although he does not know what it is or could be, he believes it is a threat to his community and the way to remove a threat is to first understand it. What he uncovers is both sinister and brutal. The information he gathers is of such importance he must make his way back to the troop he left behind to tell Boota, the current leader and his son, about what he has seen and his fears that their population of chimpanzees, all chimpanzees and many other animals, are facing "Endgame". The end of time as they know it will befall them if steps are not taken.
