The place is New York City. The time: Spring 1963.
Riva lives in a brownstone on East 87th Street between York and East End Avenue occupied by violent screamers. She's a sophomore at the High School of Music and Art and one night, instead of preparing her Geography homework, she writes in her notebook, "If I don't find someone or something to love, I will die."
The story of RIVA BESIDE ME is told by the guardian angel, the spirit who shows up in response to her call. He is not at all happy with his mute weakling and makes no bones about it. However, with the help of the reluctant guardian angel, the boy who intrudes in art class, and a German-made Erika typewriter, Riva transforms herself into a fearless young woman.
Scenes take place at the Museum of Natural History, Horn & Hardart, Chock Full O'Nuts, in subways, at Columbia University, on the Staten Island Ferry, in Greenwich Village, Chinatown, Grand Central Station, at the Fuji Bank on Wall Street, and the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park.
