"They have rules, so arcane, so pedantic, they'd make Kafka blush. It's torture for anyone with common sense."
Prelude
The upper echelons of the city's legal profession were a privileged and insular bunch. For years, the elite members of the Lawyers Association's High Council had jealously guarded the keys to their professional kingdom, erecting lofty barriers to entry that allowed only a select few to join their rarefied ranks. Little did the public know, their sinister machinations played out not in the stately courtrooms, but rather in the dimly lit chambers of an upscale adult entertainment club.
It was here, amidst the musky scents and soft red lighting, that the Council would convene in strictest secrecy. As they lounged amid plush velvet and the clink of crystal goblets, the topic of discussion inevitably turned to that of new candidates seeking admission to practice. With a disdainful curl of the lip, the elder members would lament the prospect of having to share their lucrative monopoly.
"The great unwashed simply do not appreciate the sanctity of our calling," growled Reginald Featherstone III, his jowls quivering with indignation. "We must take measures to stem this rising tide of mediocrity."
A hush fell over the den of inequity as Featherstone unveiled his latest diabolical scheme. In a ceremonial of sorts, a beleaguered litigant was metaphorically crushed under the weight of exorbitant legal fees, his life's savings siphoned away to fuel the Council's opulent lifestyles. This grim spectacle served to stoke their ruthless resolve.
And so, it was decreed that a new and cruelly Byzantine exam process would be implemented, designed to be as ambiguous and unforgiving as possible. What had previously been a single day's examination was now restructured into a three hour session, with a total of twenty multiple-choice questions to be crammed into that span. The subject matter was to be so arcane, so impenetrably dense, that no amount of preparation could ensure success.
Word of the Council's draconian new policies spread like a virus through the student population. Despair and anxiety took hold as the hopefuls realized their chances had been slim to none. Some simply abandoned their dreams, unwilling to subject themselves to such psychological torment. Others were driven to darker paths, the pressure culminating in at least one tragic outcome.
