Retainers follows the story of Nero, a sassy, rebellious, and ambitious teenager trapped in a world dominated by the Peace Corps—a powerful organization that oppresses its citizens and has haunted Nero's life since childhood. His yearning to escape the constraints of his mundane life in the forest and his disdain for the Peace Corps put him on a path filled with many twists and turns to becoming a Retainer, a group of courageous individuals who confront the injustices perpetuated by the Peace Corps.
Despite receiving an invitation letter from the Retainers, his goal of becoming a Retainer proves to be a path fraught with outlandish obstacles and welcomed diversions. His life takes a drastic turn, when Frides, an assassin from a mysterious group is sent to kill him.
In a twist of fate, Criselda, his guardian and a former Peace Corps member herself, makes a deal with Frides, where Frides becomes Nero's bodyguard. Now Nero must navigate the treacherous world controlled by the Peace Corps while he journeys to the safe house of the Retainers.
