English diarist and occasional short story writer, John D Hill, was born in Malta in 1961. He was blessed with quite a vivid imagination and a flair for the English language from an early age.
His first experience of writing stories came as a pupil at St Andrew's Church School in Taunton, Somerset, when, at around the age of 10, he wrote A Family of Birds, a series of short, humorous tales about the antics of 3 birds; a sparrow, swallow, and a house martin, named Bitty, Swizz, and Obo. Another story, Andrew's Raft, was about a boy's adventures sailing around the islands of the Mediterranean Sea on a home made raft floating on empty oil barrels. These short stories were sometimes read out by the classroom teacher of the time, Mr Gordon Fisher. It is not known if any of these first writings exist today, the School's archives would need to be approached to confirm or deny as such. However, it was understood that A Family of Birds, at least, was still being read to similar aged pupils at St Andrew's after the author had moved onto senior school a year or two later.
At Castle School, Taunton, he continued with his imaginative ways, and, along with a classroom friend, Kevin Hartnell, compiled numerous stick men type cartoon adventures of The Supergroup, four action hero characters called Fred, Harry, Eddy, and Bert. The characters were all based on the author's schoolfriends of the time; he being Fred, Kevin Hartnell being Harry, Edwin Isaacs being Eddy, and Richard Rewbury being Bert.
A prolific diarist, he kept a journal in his adult life that amounted to around 3 million words, some of which has been published in e-book and paperback form.
The Chairman Stories is a short comic horror story about the chairman of a bank who dies and goes to Hell. It comprises of seven chapters, or Grievances, and a final brief Appeal. The story comes bristling with scathing ridicule; poking fun at the productivity driven modern workplaces and their weak unions and the stifling treatment of the oppressed workforce as it toils away at mundane, repetitive and tiresome chores. Everyone is guilty in this sadly prophetic send up of the worsening employment conditions for the everyday worker, be it in an office, a factory, and doubtless many other locations to boot.
Join the Chairman on this hellish journey into a completely new way of looking at the Devil's homeland.
