Detective John Davenport, renowned for his eccentric style and unorthodox approach, is urgently called to the heart of the English monarchy to solve a murder case. The adventure begins with Davenport and Turner arriving at Buckingham Palace, where the body of the royal butler, Frederick Morris, is discovered lifeless beside the throne. Morris clutches a torn white glove, the only tangible clue that opens the door to a complex investigation. The case is made even more dramatic by the murder's proximity to a royal gala, which must proceed without raising suspicion to avoid disturbing the guests and the royal family.
The crime scene, seemingly orderly and devoid of signs of a struggle, suggests a calculating killer. However, Davenport, with his keen eye, notices details others miss: a suspicious scratch on the throne and a mysterious tea stain on the white glove. These small details prove to be crucial clues, unraveling a network of intrigue and rivalries. The discovery of a secret diary belonging to the late butler sheds new light on the case, revealing that Morris was entangled in personal and professional dealings that may have led to his demise.
