"I'm your only choice. Stay here. You'll die." Perturbed, he turned off the lamp flame and an unbearable darkness surrounded them. To teach her a lesson, he would leave her here, suspended in this icy tomb to freeze to death. He would not taint his men's watery grave by sinking her in the millpond. "Around here, not following the rules, not accepting help will get you killed."
Her breathy, rapid pant spoke. "Oh, if you insist!"
"Oh, I insist. After you." He skinned his hat over his sweaty, ill-kept salt and pepper hair and ran a finger under his runny nose. "We better go."
She skirted past him but hesitated on the busted door frame.
Lit by the moon, sparkling shards of ice littered the pathway like broken glass, and she looked back. "I fear—"
"Damnation! I knew you'd be a pain in my ass." He swooped in, tossing her over his shoulder, driving his spiked boots, steadying his climb over the snowdrift. Her valise banged against his back, but she did not protest or scream. Out on the crunchy rutted road, he deposited her in the sleigh, put her valise at her feet and pulled a dirty sheepskin over her knees. "Here, cover your legs."
