Los mitos y cuentos amerindios conforman, a pesar de la gran variedad geográfica y cultural de América, una unidad en la diversidad. Reflejo de una religiosidad no vinculada con el dogma, estos relatos orales son narrados y recibidos como versiones y comentarios de cosas que se cuentan, de lo que se dice que aconteció o ha de suceder. Al carecer de una pretensión de verdad inapelable, los mitos se renuevan y transforman constantemente. Los temas son recurrentes (el futuro catastrófico, los mundos múltiples, la fragilidad del espacio humano o la fascinación por el otro), pero sus concreciones, fugaces y mutantes.
