Mark Twain, pseudónimo de Samuel Langhorn Clemens, nasceu na Florida, em 1835. Aos quatro anos, a sua família mudou-se para Hannibal, uma pequena cidade à beira do Mississípi. Quinze anos depois, após a morte de seu pai, abandonou a escola e começou a trabalhar como tipógrafo e assistente editorial. Em 1856, tornou-se piloto fluvial, começou a escrever textos de humor e encontrou o pseudónimo pelo qual ficou conhecido, «Mark Twain». Mark Twain foi um aventureiro nato e a sua própria vida serviu de inspiração para a sua obra. Considerado o pai da literatura americana, é, segundo William Faulkner, «o primeiro escritor verdadeiramente americano, e todos nós apenas os seus herdeiros». Outro grande escritor, Ernest Hemingway, elogiou o autor e referiu mesmo que «toda a literatura moderna americana vem do livro de Mark Twain As Aventuras de Huckleberry Finn. Toda a literatura americana vem daí. Nada foi feito antes. Nada tão bom foi feito depois.»
Edgar Allan Poe (1809 – 1849) est un écrivain américain, poète, romancier et nouvelliste du XIXe siècle. On lui doit les Aventures d'Arthur Gordon Pym et les Histoires extraordinaires. Ses œuvres, traduites en France par Baudelaire, remportent un succès retentissant dans le pays et en influencent grandement la littérature.
Author of the iconic novel The Thirty-Nine Steps, John Buchan filled many roles including barrister, colonial administrator, publisher, Director of Intelligence, and Member of Parliament. The Thirty-Nine Steps, first in the Richard Hannay series, is widely regarded as the starting point for espionage fiction and was written to pass time while Buchan recovered from an illness. During the outbreak of the First World War, Buchan wrote propaganda for the British war effort, combining his skills as author and politician. In 1935 Buchan was appointed the 15th Governor General of Canada and established the Governor General’s Literacy Award. Buchan was enthusiastic about literacy and the evolution of Canadian culture. He died in 1940 and received a state funeral in Canada before his ashes were returned to the United Kingdom.
George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a popular Scottish lecturer and writer of novels, poetry, and fairy tales. Born in Aberdeenshire, he was briefly a clergyman, then a professor of English literature at Bedford and King's College in London. W. H. Auden called him "one of the most remarkable writers of the nineteenth century."
Jack London, né John Griffith Chaney le 12 janvier 1876 à San Francisco et mort le 22 novembre 1916 à Glen Ellen, Californie, est un écrivain américain dont les thèmes de prédilection sont l'aventure et la nature sauvage. Il a écrit L'Appel de la forêt, Croc-Blanc et plus de cinquante autres nouvelles et romans connus.

Il est mort à Beaconsfield le 15 décembre 1947.
