Jacqui has lived an adventure-filled life, spanning a range of careers and countries. She's wrangled kindergarten children, driven buses, researched humpback whales, spoken at the United Nations, visited Antarctica, and farmed deer. These days she writes strange and sometimes sexy fiction. Jacqui doesn't believe in happily ever after, so shares her house with a cat.

A Taste of Gold is Deryn Pittar's first Young Adult novella. She loved creating the characters in this story, especially the Taniwha (pronounced tanny-far) from Maori mythology. This story has inspired her to write more stories for teenagers in the future.
Deryn, writing as Virginnia De Parte, also pens futuristic fiction, spiced with romance and adventure. She has four novellas published as e-books. Setting her stories in the future allows her imagination to run free, creating characters with unheard-of talents. She also has the pleasure of watching science and technology catch up with her imagination.
She is a published poet. She lives in the aptly named Bay of Plenty, New Zealand; along with four million people and a number of hobbits.
Melissa Gunn spent several years pursuing a science career before deciding it would be more fun to write fiction – though it turns out that there is even more research involved. She enjoys combining facts that seem fantastical with actual fantasy, and creating quirky characters with a sense of humour. When she’s not trying to figure out how a volcano demigod would problem-solve, she is feeding her backyard menagerie, chasing chickens out of the garden, or taking photographs of whatever will stand still for long enough (so mostly plants).
Octavia Cade is a speculative fiction writer from New Zealand. She has a PhD in science communication, and her academic work often focuses on how science is presented in horror and scifi.
Welcome to the End of the World
...and more importantly, what comes after.
Disasters have occurred around the country and the world, but we're "getting through it", as Kiwi are apt to do. She'll be right. Life moves on, in some form.
Things were bad here in Aotearoa, but in our isolation down under, we've escaped most of the chaos around the world. In fact, we might be the last bastion of humanity on the planet - anybody else home out there? Radio silence. Nada. Zip.
This is not, however, just an anthology of disaster stories. These pages are filled with hope in the form of short stories, poems, flash fiction and artwork about what comes afterwards. The contributions are exclusively from SpecFicNZ members and reflect the diversity and breadth of this country we love to call home... even if the edges are a bit torn and tattered. Nothing that a bit of Kiwi ingenuity and some number 8 wire can't fix, eh?
This is Aftermath: Stories of Survival in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Kia kaha. Stay strong.
And remember - we are always stronger together. Kotahitanga.
