Writer-editor Elizabeth Foxwell's interest in women's contributions to World War I was sparked by the work of _Testament of Youth_ author Vera Brittain; her Georgetown University master's thesis on Brittain's World War II period received distinction. A specialist in the history of mystery/detective fiction, the recipient of Agatha and Dove awards, and an editor at McFarland and Co., Inc, Publishers, she lives outside of Washington, DC.
This short story collection of mostly historical mysteries includes "No Man's Land" (Agatha winner, Macavity nominee) and "Keeper of the Flame (first-prize winner, 2003 Cape Fear Crime Festival Short Story Contest). Settings range from the Civil War and the "Titanic" to World War I and the 1918 flu pandemic, including figures such as Dorothea Dix, Alice Roosevelt Longworth, and Oscar Wilde. Also included is an affectionate pastiche of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson on the trail of a missing board game.
