English author William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) was known for his works of horror and science-fiction. His first story, The Goddess of Death, was published in 1904. The Night Land, his last printed effort, was published in 1918. Hodgson was also renowned as a photographer and a bodybuilder. He died in battle during World War I at the age of 40.
Bram Stoker (1847-1912) was an Irish writer and the author of the acclaimed novel Dracula. Stoker moved to London where he worked as acting and business manager at Lyceum Theatre for twenty-eight years. He was also personal assistant to actor Henry Irving. To this day Dracula is a timeless piece of literature, which has inspired countless films and spin off stories.

À 10 ans, retirée de l'école religieuse où deux de ses sœurs ont contracté la tuberculose, qui leur sera fatale, elle commence à écrire, concevant avec son frère et ses sœurs un univers de fantaisie. À 19 ans, elle devient gouvernante et commence à rédiger Le professeur, qu'enrichira son séjour dans une pension de jeunes filles en Belgique, en 1842.
Son projet de créer une école avec ses sœurs n'aboutira pas, mais en 1846, sous le pseudonyme de Bell, paraît leur premier recueil. Nourri de tant d'expériences, Jane Eyre trouve un éditeur en 1847 et connaît un vif succès. Trollope, George Eliot, Thackeray ne cachent pas leur admiration. Deux romans suivront, Shirley en 1849 et Villette en 1853.
Mariée en 1854, elle meurt de maladie en 1855.
George Eliot was the pseudonym for Mary Anne Evans, one of the leading writers of the Victorian era, who published seven major novels and several translations during her career. She started her career as a sub-editor for the left-wing journal The Westminster Review, contributing politically charged essays and reviews before turning her attention to novels. Among Eliot’s best-known works are Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda, in which she explores aspects of human psychology, focusing on the rural outsider and the politics of small-town life. Eliot died in 1880.
Arthur Machen est né à Caerlon-on-Usk (Royaume-Uni) le 3 mars 1863. En 1885 un "Catalogue occultiste" puis devient journaliste et traducteur. Son oeuvre compte une trentaine d'ouvrages se rattachant principalement à la littérature fantastique. Parmi ses principaux récits, citons notamment "Le Grand Dieu Pan" (1894). Il est mort à Beaconsfield le 15 décembre 1947.

Lord Byron was an English poet and the most infamous of the English Romantics, glorified for his immoderate ways in both love and money. Benefitting from a privileged upbringing, Byron published the first two cantos of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage upon his return from his Grand Tour in 1811, and the poem was received with such acclaim that he became the focus of a public mania. Following the dissolution of his short-lived marriage in 1816, Byron left England amid rumours of infidelity, sodomy, and incest.
In self-imposed exile in Italy Byron completed Childe Harold and Don Juan. He also took a great interest in Armenian culture, writing of the oppression of the Armenian people under Ottoman rule; and in 1823, he aided Greece in its quest for independence from Turkey by fitting out the Greek navy at his own expense.
Two centuries of references to, and depictions of Byron in literature, music, and film began even before his death in 1824.

Romancier et auteur dramatique anglais, Matthew Gregory Lewis est né à Londres le 9 juillet 1775, mort le 14 mai 1818. Son œuvre principale est "Le Moine", considéré comme l'un des chefs-d'œuvre du roman gothique.
