English author William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) was known for his works of horror and science-fiction. His first story, The Goddess of Death, was published in 1904. The Night Land, his last printed effort, was published in 1918. Hodgson was also renowned as a photographer and a bodybuilder. He died in battle during World War I at the age of 40.

C'est alors qu'il donne les poèmes satiriques des Châtiments (1853), dirigés contre Napoléon III, le recueil lyrique des Contemplations (1856), histoire de l'âme du poète dédiée à Léopoldine, l'épopée de la Légende des siècles (édition définitive : 1883), ainsi que des romans (les Misérables ; les Travailleurs de la mer, 1866 ; l'Homme qui rit, 1869). Rentré en France en 1870, partisan des idées républicaines, il est un personnage honoré et officiel, et, à sa mort le 22 mai 1885, ses cendres sont transférées au Panthéon.

George Eliot was the pseudonym for Mary Anne Evans, one of the leading writers of the Victorian era, who published seven major novels and several translations during her career. She started her career as a sub-editor for the left-wing journal The Westminster Review, contributing politically charged essays and reviews before turning her attention to novels. Among Eliot’s best-known works are Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda, in which she explores aspects of human psychology, focusing on the rural outsider and the politics of small-town life. Eliot died in 1880.
Born in 1804, Nathaniel Hawthorne is known for his historical tales and novels about American colonial society. After publishing The Scarlet Letter in 1850, its status as an instant bestseller allowed him to earn a living as a novelist. Full of dark romanticism, psychological complexity, symbolism, and cautionary tales, his work is still popular today. He has earned a place in history as one of the most distinguished American writers of the nineteenth century.

Following the dissolution of his short-lived marriage in 1816, Byron left England amid rumours of infidelity, sodomy, and incest.
In self-imposed exile in Italy Byron completed Childe Harold and Don Juan. He also took a great interest in Armenian culture, writing of the oppression of the Armenian people under Ottoman rule; and in 1823, he aided Greece in its quest for independence from Turkey by fitting out the Greek navy at his own expense.
Two centuries of references to, and depictions of Byron in literature, music, and film began even before his death in 1824.
